Alico Engineering Ltd works across London and Hertfordshire from a yard at Kitts End Farm. Heating, electrical and building trades are all in-house, which is the whole basis of how we run a project.
Most building firms of our size are really a main contractor with a book of subcontractors. It works, but it puts the coordination risk on the client — three trades, three programmes, and a gap between them that somebody has to manage.
Alico is structured differently. Heat, electric and build are our own disciplines rather than three companies we call. Services are set out together before first fix, the structural sequence drives the trades rather than following them, and the person who priced the job is on site while it's built.
That's not a marketing position, it's why our programmes hold. When something is found behind a wall — and on a period property something always is — there's one team to re-sequence around it rather than four diaries to reconcile.
Alico Engineering Ltd is a family business, led by Erkan Ali. There is no account management layer between you and the people building your house — the person you meet at the survey is the person running the job.
We work on a relatively small number of projects at a time. That's a deliberate constraint rather than a limitation: it's what allows a supervisor on site more than once a week, and it's why we're able to maintain the properties we've refurbished rather than handing over and disappearing.
Most of our work comes from clients we've built for before and the people they recommend us to. That's the standard we're trying to hold, and it's a considerably more demanding one than winning a tender.
